2020 Valentine's Day Gift Guide

Usually I’m not a big fan of valentine’s day - i don’t hate it, i just don’t love it. It’s one of those “oh, we’re doing this again?” kind of holiday.

That being said, since we’re stuck at home desperately turning to online shopping to keep our sanity (not me, but you know, some people), i thought i would do my part and put together a gift guide centered around decor and self care for all budgets.

SECRET ROOM - GAMEROOM REVEAL

In the beginning of quarantine (the original, not the sequel) we had this idea of finishing a space we have behind the kitchen. When we first renovated, we didn’t really have plans for this space. We didn’t need more storage space, but at the same time we knew we couldn’t just close it off. For one because duh, and secondly because we needed to keep the acces to the water heater. So, since it’s a really tiny space, with a tiny door and sloped ceillings, we figured we would build a gameroom.

project F - RIVERSIDE APARTMENT - KITCHEN BEFORE AND AFTER

After what seemed like the longest renovation for such a small space, we’re finally at the finish line for this riverside apartment. Doing a full renovation in the midst of a global pandemic was challenging, to say the least, but we made it through with nothing but a minor (major) delay. ha!

This time, I’m doing the reveal room by room and starting with a bang with my favourite room it the house, the kitchen!

As you may remember, the kitchen and living room were separate in the original floorplan. We opted for an open plan right away because for such a small space, that’s what made more sense. This way we would not only gain in natural light, but also in practicality.

So let’s jump into the before, shall we?

BEDROOM NOOK

If there’s one thing that this quarantine has shown us (apart from the obvious) is that there is always a little corner of the house that needs work.

When we renovated, we opened up this little space to create a nook that would work as a closet. However, since we moved in that it froze in that temporary phase that we all knew was never going to be that temporary to start with.

That being said, i felt like doing something different without having to spend a lot, so this was my humble attempt.

project F - RIVERSIDE APARTMENT DEMO AND MOODBOARD

Now that work has officially started on this project, I’ve gathered all of the materials and finishes i’ll be using on the apartment. Since this is going to be a rental, I tried to keep things very soft and light, with a few touches of brass, of course. i’m only human, ha!

If you remember from the updated floorplan on the previous post, the bedroom will be divided by a “wall” of open storage, in order to create a dressing area that is separate from the sleeping area. This way we are able to get a little natural light in the bathroom with a portion of the wall being replaced by frosted glass.

To add something special to the otherwise blank space, I’ve decided to paint the door dusty blue and add some sass with the brass and leather doorhandle.

So here is a round up of all the materials I picked so far.

MARBLE SHELF

This marble shelf was a piece we wanted done from the beginning but as it represented a big chunk out of our budget, it had to wait a few years. For two years our living room looked unfinished, with everything on the floor. Before actually going through with it, I searched for a few cheaper alternatives, but in the end, marble is marble.

DIY FRAME

For a while we wanted to do something to this white wall (we tried doing a statement blue plaster wall, but the color wasn’t what we were expecting, so we will eventually change it). I looked for an art piece for a long time but every piece that was big enough for this massive wall was way too expensive, so we decided we would make our own.

HOME BEFORE AND AFTER

Everyone that has gone through a renovation know it is the most slow-moving, painful process and it always takes twice as long as you were expecting it to. Even though this renovation took 3, almost 4 months (wich seems doable), I was pulling my hair out by the end. So believe when I tell you I am very VERY happy to show you the final before and after tour, because it definetely makes me feel like it was all worth it.

HOME RENOVATION

As everyone who has made it through a renovation knows, it is one of the most exausting experiences, both physically and mentally. I won’t sugar coat it, it’s not for the faint of heart. If you don’t have a good handful of meltdowns by the time you’re done, you’re doing it wrong.
